I work as a story artist and 2D animator at Laika. After graduating high school, I tried and failed to get into CalArts’ animation program, and instead began wandering aimlessly across the country, from Portland to Vancouver BC, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, hawking my drawings to any animation studio that would buy them, in a pinball-like existence that eventually landed me at my goal of someday working on an animated feature. I do not necessarily recommend this “strategy” to anyone else with this goal. You should probably keep applying to CalArts. However, I did get to experience a bunch of cities, though, so that was pretty entertaining, which is nice.
