I work as a story artist and facial animation designer at Laika in Portland, OR. After  graduating high school and failing to convince CalArts that I was animator material, I began wandering the U.S. and Canada aimlessly, hawking my drawings to any studio that would buy them, in a pinball-like existence that eventually landed me at my original goal, animated features. I do not necessarily recommend this strategy to anyone else with this goal. You should probably keep applying to CalArts until you get in. However, I did get to live in a bunch of cities, though, so that was pretty entertaining, which is nice.
